The clinical dietician:
- attends in-patient appointments and will ensure that enzymes dose is correct.
- from time to time CF patients or their parents will be required to keep a detailed food diary for a few days to help her calculate this dose
- advise on salt supplementation during hot weather or during physical exercise
- consult patients experiencing constipation

People with CF:
- Use more energy due to the effects of CF on the lungs. Energy needs increase especially during times of chest infections.
- May not absorb nutrients and energy completely due to malabsorption. Taking pancreatic enzymes helps to overcome this.

In Cystic Fibrosis the types, amounts and energy value of foods eaten are an important part of the treatment. Since everyone with CF differs in both health and food preferences, meal planning and nutrition must cater for the individual. It must focus on:
- Higher than normal energy and protein requirements
- The body's varying ability to digest and absorb fats, protein and other nutrients
